Burglars don’t pick; they instead kick their way into your home

19 Jul
There’s much abuzz about rising unemployment and people who have too much
time on their hands, so they burglarize for fun and profit.  Their tactics are becoming
quite bold, and where they used to discretely back a vehicle up someone’s driveway,
to kick-in a back door, they will now even try to gain entrance through a front door.
Their tactics range from bump key entrance to outright boldness of kicking in a front
door.

As a consumer, there is much you can do to protect yourself, and buying $200 locks
is not the answer!  While these locks might deter picking and bump key break-ins,
there is still a weakness in the door and door jamb, where the wood is hollowed out
to nest the deadbolt and strike; these are the points that yield under the pressure
of a straight kick-in.

What can I do to protect my home?

Why spend $200 on expensive locks, when you cannot afford a false sense of security?
Here’s what we at Texas LockStar recommend:
1) Make sure your existing deadbolt hardware is not loosely hanging on the door.
2) Check to make sure your deadbolt strike is inserting properly into the door jamb.
3) Anti-Bump proof your locks by asking your locksmith, to install an anti-bump kit
in your exterior deadbolt locks.
4) Ask your locksmith to reinforce your door, door jamb, and hinges; on all exterior
doors and we highly recommend Door Jamb Armor EZ.   The cost is about the same
as a $200 lock (prices vary for double doors, etc.) and your sense of security is real.

We hope you find our advice helpful.
Feel free to contact us anytime you need advice.
We promise never to sell you something you simply don’t need.

Shifting Home Foundations are Creating Havoc for Entry Doors

07 Oct
Odd Weather Patterns are wreaking havoc on our home foundations, and with the
shrinking clay, we are seeing entry doors that scrape the floor to open, doors
that won't quite close, and doors that will close if one lifts up the door
(with tremendous effort) to close it.

Don't rush out and buy a new door, because when your foundation corrects, your
new door will be completely out of whack, since it was installed to align with
your misaligned foundation.

Schedule your door jamb session now, and we can easily re-align your door to
function properly. These changes are non-invasive and are easily reversible
if/when your foundation re-corrects. Your doors will operate correctly, your
locks will properly engage, and your bank account will smile.

Homeowner Awareness

06 Oct

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting and working with a wonderful, perky 81 year old woman in Houston, TX who had her home broken into while she was out. Even though this was a terrible inconvenience, items taken from her home were only “things” and these can be replaced. As she was going through her belongings trying to discern what had been taken, she went to secure the back door and then realized her keys were not where she had always left them, hanging on the key organizer by her door.  Now she went to look for all of her keys and found out that her car keys had also been stolen.

After reporting all of this to the police, she called Texas Lockstar to come out that evening and rekey all of her locks.  The burglars kept her keys as they planned to return to her home to burglarize again and this time to also steal her car. Rekeying all of this will make this much more difficult for them to return to this address again.

Here are some tips to keep you safe in your home:

1) Be conscientious about who you loan your keys to, and if you feel even a little bit uneasy, do not hesitate to rekey your locks.

2) Get to know your neighbors by participating in events like neighbors night out or just making an effort to introduce yourself to neighbors on both sides of your home as well as across the street.

3) Leave a spare key with a neighbor and/or hide a spare key in an outdoor key safe, similar to the ones used by realtors to secure a key for home showings.  If you choose to use a key safe, it is best to put this somewhere discreet, such as a backyard hose bib located behind a shrubbery.

4) Consider getting a monitored alarm system.  Monitored alarm systems are getting more and more affordable as technology is making these even more effective. Some of the latest home monitored systems even allow you to arm or disarm your alarm system with your cellular phone.

5) Dogs are a wonderful deterrent, especially dogs that are inside guarding the house, and most burglars will choose to go elsewhere when they determine dogs are present.

6) When traveling, let your neighbors know when you are leaving and also when you plan to return.  Make arrangements with your neighbors to pick up your newspapers, mail, and anything else left at your door that could suggest you are not presently home.

7) As popular as social networking is, do not tell your buddies online that you will be traveling to Europe for 2 weeks on March 11.  This information is often used for planning of robbery events.  Best to tell your friends online after you return from your vacation.

8) Be aware of parked cars on your street, and people in them that may be looking for patterns on your departures. Try to mix up your routine instead of standing appointments that make your departures predictable. In the above example, the woman had a standing 10:30 am appointment every Friday at the salon.  It’s very likely her burglars happened to notice her at the beauty salon and then followed her back home.
