Recently I had the pleasure of meeting and working with a wonderful, perky 81 year old woman in Houston, TX who had her home broken into while she was out. Even though this was a terrible inconvenience, items taken from her home were only “things” and these can be replaced. As she was going through her belongings trying to discern what had been taken, she went to secure the back door and then realized her keys were not where she had always left them, hanging on the key organizer by her door. Now she went to look for all of her keys and found out that her car keys had also been stolen.
After reporting all of this to the police, she called Texas Lockstar to come out that evening and rekey all of her locks. The burglars kept her keys as they planned to return to her home to burglarize again and this time to also steal her car. Rekeying all of this will make this much more difficult for them to return to this address again.
Here are some tips to keep you safe in your home:
1) Be conscientious about who you loan your keys to, and if you feel even a little bit uneasy, do not hesitate to rekey your locks.
2) Get to know your neighbors by participating in events like neighbors night out or just making an effort to introduce yourself to neighbors on both sides of your home as well as across the street.
3) Leave a spare key with a neighbor and/or hide a spare key in an outdoor key safe, similar to the ones used by realtors to secure a key for home showings. If you choose to use a key safe, it is best to put this somewhere discreet, such as a backyard hose bib located behind a shrubbery.
4) Consider getting a monitored alarm system. Monitored alarm systems are getting more and more affordable as technology is making these even more effective. Some of the latest home monitored systems even allow you to arm or disarm your alarm system with your cellular phone.
5) Dogs are a wonderful deterrent, especially dogs that are inside guarding the house, and most burglars will choose to go elsewhere when they determine dogs are present.
6) When traveling, let your neighbors know when you are leaving and also when you plan to return. Make arrangements with your neighbors to pick up your newspapers, mail, and anything else left at your door that could suggest you are not presently home.
7) As popular as social networking is, do not tell your buddies online that you will be traveling to Europe for 2 weeks on March 11. This information is often used for planning of robbery events. Best to tell your friends online after you return from your vacation.
Be aware of parked cars on your street, and people in them that may be looking for patterns on your departures. Try to mix up your routine instead of standing appointments that make your departures predictable. In the above example, the woman had a standing 10:30 am appointment every Friday at the salon. It’s very likely her burglars happened to notice her at the beauty salon and then followed her back home.
